The greatest ending ever?...........

WOW. No choice but to chime in on what was the greatest ending to a football game I have ever seen. Of course I am referring to Boise State's thrilling victory over Oklahoma in last night's Fiesta Bowl. For those of you who didn't see it, a quick rundown of what happened:

  • Down by a TD and 2 pt. conversion, converted WR Paul Thompson drives the Sooners the length of the field for the tying score with under 2 minutes to play.
  • On their first play after the kickoff, Boise State QB Jared Zabransky throws an ill advised out pattern which is picked and returned 50 yards for a score (Sooners up 7).
  • Zabransky gets the ball back with just over a minute to play and promptly drives the Broncos straight down the field for the tying score, which came on the most beautifully executed hook and lateral you will ever see.
  • On the first play of OT, Adrian Peterson slices through the Boise defense for a 25 yards TD, putting Oklahoma up 7.
  • On fourth and 2 from inside the 10, Boise State scores a touchdown on a halfback pass.
  • Instead of kicking for the tie, Boise State goes for two and gets the conversion on a statue of liberty play.
Much will be said about this game so let me get my thoughts in. First and foremost, Chris Peterson is an absolute coaching stud! His stones are so big I am surprised he doesn't need a dumptruck to follow him around. I mean, I watched it live and I still can't believe his guts. Second, Peterson's performance as a play caller at the end of regulation and overtime might be the best play calling I have ever seen. It was almost like he had planned on using the hook and lateral, half back pass, and statue of liberty, from the beginning of the game. Most impressive, though, was not that he called each play at the absolute perfect moment (he did), but that his players executed each play to perfection. Third, major props are due to Jared Zabransky and the Boise offense for picking themselves up after what should have been a crushing blow (the pick six) and driving down the field. Just awesome stuff.

For those of you who missed the game, do yourselves a favor and check it out on ESPN classic.......they'll be replaying this one for a while.
