An oustanding post by Frazier, just want to get that out of the way.
That said, some candid thoughts on the latest BCS debacle.......
The "don't lose" mantra works, except for when, like this year, there are two deserving 1 loss teams. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for the BCS to say to Michigan on the one hand "tough luck, you shouln't have lost", and then say to Florida on the other hand "way to go, your one loss was better than anyone else's." It's a flawed system and until it's fixed we are going to have these idiotic debates every year.
Which brings me to my second point. Why the fuck haven't we gone to the plus one system yet!!!? The BCS determined that Florida is more deserving than Michigan, and while I won't necessarily argue with the result I am not about to say that it isn't debatable. What wouldn't be debatable would be if the Gators and Wolverings played in a 2 vs. 3 matchup for the right to play Ohio State in Glendale (presuming the Buckeyes would beat the 4 team). And yes, I know tihs isn't baseball Frazier, but your "don't lose" mantra works with the plus one system. Even if there were 2 undefeated teams, they'd both need to win out to win the title.
Not to pile on the BCS about the Michigan thing, but explain this one to me: Notre Dame was deemed BCS bowl worthy, yet the team that annihilated them at South Bend, Michigan, was the one loss team left out. I know that Florida also beat a BCS bowl team (LSU) but along those lines Michigan's sole loss was to the BCS bound Ohio State while Florida's sole loss was to the non-BCS bound Auburn. Seems somewhat inconsistent to me.
As a Michigan fan I was bummed they didn't get called to Glendale, but their Rose Bowl matchup against USC should be an old school classic. Plus, the winner of the game will have the inside track on the 2007 preseason #1 ranking. Seriously, this year's Rose Bowl looks like a potential preview of the 2008 title game.
Non BCS Bowl Games I Will be Watching:
- Hawaii Bowl: Hawaii vs. Arizona State
- Las Vegas Bowl: BYU vs. Oregon
- Papajohns.com Bowl: East Carolina vs. South Florida
- Texas Bowl: Rutgers vs. Kansas State
- Capital One Bowl: Arkansas vs. Auburn
- Emerald Bowl: UCLA vs. Florida State
- Music City Bowl: Clemson vs. Kentucky
- Alamo Bowl: Texas vs. Iowa
